The Advisory Board of Andalucía has rejected the separation of Carchuna from Motril to form an independent municipality.
Carchuna and Calahonda had been hoping to become the 170th municipality of Granada but it is not to be.
The 48-page report from the Advisory Board sets out its rejection of the proposal, one of the missing requisites was that there must be a minimum margin of non-urbanized land between the town are making the request and its mother municipality.
The other insurmountable problem is Article 13.2 of the Ley de Bases de Régimen Local, which stipulates that it must have a minimum population of 5,000 inhabitants.
The First Councillor of Carchuna-Calahonda, Concepcion Abarca, (PP) doesn’t intend to throw in the towel, mind. After receiving the “disagreeable surprise” from the regional organ, she opposes the two points of rejection: she says that the corridor exists in some places but not in others.
Above all, she considers that the rejection was fueled by “political motives” meaning that she belongs to the PP and the Regional Government belongs to the PSOE.
In short, she considers that Carchuna-Calahonda are independent villages, whatever they may say…
