The new system is a LED-based one, which should make a nice difference to the cost of street lighting.

The Councillor for Maintenance, José Manuel Fernández, explained that they are speaking with several companies that offer this kind of product; i.e., intelligent lighting.
According to the said companies such a system could mean up to 60% savings on normal electricity bills for public lighting

”New technologies let you control via a computer all the necessary lighting; i.e., according to how many people are around at a given moment,” explained the Councillor, so that when lighting is most needed, it can be increased, and when there are fewer people about, diminish it.

For the time being the new system is on trial at several areas of the town, he added.

Editorial note: Just a thought, but isn’t it precisely when there are fewer people about that you are most grateful of well-lit streets – nobody likes walking through darkened streets…
