The programme starts with a humorous representation of the old classic Romeo and Juliet on Friday 14th February in the Teatro Calderón from 8:30pm.

MOT Juan ZarzuelaThen on February 27th, marking the Día de Andalucia at the end of the month, there will be a Flamenco concert featuring Juan Zarzuelita from Jerez, performing a lyric drama to celebrate the strong musical history of our region.

International Women’s Day on the 8th March will be marked by Literary meetings which include the presentation of the latest work by Encarnación Barrera El Inferno Cabe en Un Auspiro, ‘Hell ends with a breath’, comprising of ten short stories told by separate women.

Finally, we mustn’t forget Easter, which is heralded by the fund-raising and musical practice activities which commence with the 16th February when the brass band of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Maria Santisima de la Esperanza will perform.

This Easter spirit will continue with a recital of ‘saetas’ (the typical melancholy music which accompanies the sadder moments of the Easter processions) on 1st March.

In between these significant events, Saturday 22nd February has been set aside for an exciting new initiative entitled Motril Grandees Jóvenes Músicos, which is the realisation of a collaborative project between the Motril Town Hall and the old students of the Conservatory of Music in this small city.

The performance (set to take place at the house of the Countess Torre Isabel) will include professionals who studied at the Conservatory and have reunited to form the Orchestra of Southern Spain. This should be the start of many exciting performances including another concert at the Teatro Calderón on the 22nd March.

Ms Vallejo also took the opportunity in presenting these cultural events, in reminding everyone that it is the policy of Motril’s Town Hall to use the takings from two events per month to aid charitable works in the area. This month will see the proceeds of these events on the 14th February and the 22nd February, going to the AECC (Asociación Española contra el Cáncer) and the Proyecto Hombre (for homeless men).
