David Jiménez has been declared champion in the veteran category of mountain bike circuits throughout the province of Granada.
The competition is divided into five categories (junior, promising talent, senior, veteran and master) and five circuits (Cenes de la Vega, Albuñuelas, Pitres and Beas de Granada). In the recent heats, out of the 62 athletes who competed, three cyclists from Almuñécar were successful in the finals, including David, José Joaquin Jiménez and Alfredo Fuentes.
The province of Granada is known for its spectacular scenery and challenging mountain trails and the recent success of the Almuñécar members has catapulted the club to second place in the rankings.
These results bode well for the upcoming ascent to Peña Escrita due for Sunday 15th June. A triple-headed event which draws in over one hundred competitors every year, sees a combination of mountain bikers, athletes and walkers competing to reach the summit first in this 20km challenging event. Let’s see how well the Almuñécar candidates fare on this occasion!
The Tropical Swimming Club of Almuñécar is also ‘splashing’ into the headlines with successes in the Province swimming heats which recently took place in Motril. Two teams of novices and one team of infants from Almuñécar, participated in the event and each of the teams managed to step onto the podium with their swimming victories!
Finally, Almuñécar’s Tesorillo Beach will host the Crawler RC event on the weekend of 14th and 15th of February.
Now what is a Crawler RC when it’s at home, you may well ask? Well, these are remote controlled vehicles, made of aluminium, carbon fibre and titanium and measuring approximately 50cm in length, which have taken on phenomenal popularity, both at national and international level.
These national championships are important for Almuñécar as they place our humble town as a reference point for this increasingly popular sport, a sport which has increased in popularity, particularly amongst the Scandinavian countries.
With heats beginning at 10am on the Saturday morning, the competition will continue all weekend and trophies are expected to be presented (with any luck to Almuñécar competitors as well!) on the Sunday afternoon.
