Calle Real U-Turn

LHR Calle RealThe Almuñécar Town Hall has bowed to citizen pressure and has modified the Calle Real project in La Herradura. The controversial ramp will be shortened and parking space will be returned.

The problem was that to do away with the steps the project had included a ramp with a handrail, which hardly left any room for people to get in and out of their front doors. On top of that, as the rail ran from the top to the bottom of the street, to go around it you had to walk virtually to the top so that you could cross the streets.

And then there is the mania that the Town Hall has, no matter who is sitting in the Mayor’s seat, to eliminate parking spaces, bless their cotton socks.

The fact that the controversy has become known as the Gamonal La Herradureña, referring the the rioting in Burgos over unwanted street modifications, has not pleased the governing party in general, and the First Councillor, Ruiz Joya, in particular.

The First Councillor pointed out that this is the first time in 50 years that modernization work has been carried out on this main artery and that it was precisely the opposition (PSOE) who had proposed the idea.

The accusation by the CA that he was acting like a Viceroy, didn’t exactly please him: “I’ve got two mortgages, an 80 sq/m flat and a salary of 1,700 per month that has me working from seven in the morning! Viceroy, would be somebody who gets 7,000 euros a month and a chalet in Almuñécar and another one in Morocco,” referring to the CA leader, Juan Carlos Benavides.
