Foreigner Population Decreasing

The Province of Granada has lost 5,231 inhabitants in the last two years and a good part of them are foreigners.

Leading the ‘leak’ is Almuñécar, which has lost 2,117 inhabitants, followed Granada with 1,199, Loja with 361, Polopos 280 and Molvízar 233.

But when you look at it from a percentage perspectives, Polopos has lost a whopping 14.24%, Carataunas 13.83%, Válor 9.25% and Bérchules 9.10%

Coming back to Almuñécar the register shows that 712 Brits, 298 Germans, 186 Italians and 129 French people live there. Of course, that’s the official figure but many foreigners, especially Brits, don’t bother to register, so there is a floating, unofficial population on top.

Now if you compare those figures with 2007, when the boom was in full swing, there were 941 Brits 542 Germans, 248 Italians and 180 French people.

The biggest drop, therefore, corresponds to the German population with a loss of almost 50% of their number followed by the Brits with one in four abandoning the town.

But of course when we talk about the 5,000-odd population drop within the whole province we’re talking about many Spaniards that have left in search of work – and on a small scale, that’s what’s happened in Almuñécar, too.
