Ingratitude

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing jewellery from an elderly couple who had taken pity on him.

The couple live in Armilla and on several occasions had invited the man around for lunch or dinner – they even gave him a little money now and then from the goodness of their hearts. But in return, it seems, he stole 10,000 euros’ worth of jewellery from them.

They had invited him around for a hot meal and he, allegedly, sneaked into the bedroom and lifted a bag containing gold items. The couple didn’t realise that it was missing until 15 days later. When they did, they immediately reported it to the Guardia Civil.

The police went around all the establishments in the metropolitan areas that purchase gold and soon came across one where 10,000 euros of gold items had been purchased. The person who sold them turned out to be this suspect.

These kinds of establishments, by law, have to hang onto the items for 15 days, after which they are free to melt them down, which is what had happened to the couple’s gold jewellery.

A lifetime of collecting and cherishing jewellery, each piece with its own sentimental value, lost.

Off with his pods!
