Combative Shop Staff

Three thieves who held up a small supermarket bit off more than they could chew when they were confronted by a barrage of  bottles. This occurred one evening in the Chauchina area of metropolitan Granada.

The shop was closed when the robbers struck, but six members of staff were still inside, replenishing shelves, cashing up and cleaning. Two scooter-borne thieves were waiting outside for the manager to appear and when she did, they put a pistol to her head and made her let them in.

With their identities hidden below balaclavas and motorbike helmets, the two men pushed past the girl who opened the door and shoving the manager to the floor. Whilst the first brandished his pistol menacingly, the other strode over to the cashier with a knife. The woman, instead of waiting for him to reach her, grabbed the bag containing the takings and ran off down an aisle.

This coincided with the shop owner entering the shop from a storeroom in the back and finding the two men. He immediately began insulting the two men and then grabbed a mean-looking knife from the butcher counter and advanced on them.

But the odds turned again the when other members of the staff opened up with a barrage of bottles and tins from the other side of the shop.

Having watched the takings disappear along with the fleeing cashier, having been confronted with an irate, knife-wielding proprietor and then bombarded by everything from shampoo to champagne bottles… they turned and fled.

The attempted robbery was a carbon copy of an attack on another self-service shop in La Chana that had been carried out the week before, but with greater success: 2,200 euros was taken.
