The Perils of School Truancy

A mother has to pay compensation to her own son for not having insisted upon him attending school on many occasions.

The woman from Albacete has to pay 6,000 euros to him and a fine of 2,400 euros for letting him skip school over a period of months.

The boy, now aged 17, missed school on 54 occasions during the 2007-2008 school year. His repeated absence from class coincided with when his mother was suffering from depression after having separated from her husband. The judge noted, however, that when the boy was staying with his father, he didn’t miss school.

The judge told her that she can thank her lucky stars that he did not send her to prison, because this offensive can carry a custodial sentence.
