Acompalia: Christmas Musical Evening

Acompalia celebrates Xmas with performances from two remarkable women of Granada

Acompalia, the Granada-based hospice and palliative care charity, is to host a Christmas-themed musical evening to raise funds for its recently launched Telephone Helpline and new projects. The event, which begins at 8.00 pm on Saturday 7th of December, will take place at the home of Ann and Glynn Snelling in Saleres, in Granada’s Lecrin Valley. Tickets will cost €10 each.

The Snellings, who are members of the International Club of Salobreña, have graciously invited Acompalia’s guests to their beautiful home,” said Tina Emmott, president of Acompalia. “They had the vision to create a dedicated music room there, and we are delighted to have such a special place for our Christmas musical evening.”

The room is a fitting background for performances from two women whose love of music has been a consistent thread throughout lives full of change.

Agnes Cook-Bainbridge lives in Lanjarón. Her daughter, Lindsay Ostervig, is a member of the Acompalia committee, and Agnes is generally regarded as Acompalia’s most senior fundraiser. Born in 1919 in Perth, Scotland, and married in 1937, Agnes has lived, worked, supported good causes and played her beloved piano all over the world.

A resident of Lanjarón since 2008, Agnes loves her life in the Alpujarra. “I am keen to give something back for my wonderful life here and happy to raise funds for Acompalia,” she says. Agnes will play a selection of well-known classics.

Leading the singing will be cellist, Alexander therapist, choir leader and impresario of the Music in the Mountains Festival, Cat Jary, who has been performing and promoting music since the age of nine. Since her first visit to the Alpujarra in 2002, Cat has seen the potential for music in some surprising places. ‘Music in the Mountains’, inspired by the theatre-like potential of village threshing floors, is to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2014. Her Alexander Music School attracts leading musicians to work on their technique – and to create harmonies in our beautiful mountain settings.

“Come and enjoy the log fire, the carols, mulled wine and mince pies; it’s the perfect way to launch your Christmas season,” says Tina. “By buying tickets and donating, you’ll also be helping us to counsel terminally ill patients and their families, vital at a time of year when emotions can be more intense than usual.”
