Roman Aqueduct in Need of Urgent Repair

ALM Aqueducts OnLThe Almuñécar Town Hall has asked permission from the Junta delegate in Granada to be able to repair the aqueduct in Torrecuevas.

The Councillor for Culture, Olga Ruano, said that if obtained, the work would be carried out under the supervision of archaeologists coordinated by the Archaeologic Department at the Town Hall.

The Town Council was alerted to the fact that the stretch of Roman aqueduct that goes through the small square in Torrecuevas was losing water by the Comunidad de Regantes – amazingly this Roman monument remains in use even today, which is testimony to those far-off Roman engineers and architects.

The leakage, coming from three different points, is quite copious and is affecting several support pillars in the arch work, causing deterioration in the lime filling between the stones

The aqueduct provides irrigation water for plantations in both the Río Seco and the Río Verde valleys.
