A rock slide in the quarry in Río de Miel had locals so concerned that they had a meeting with the Nerja Councillor for the Environment.
Río de Miel and Cantarriján have their own First Councillor, Vincente Ortega, who was also present at the meeting. In the meantime the Councillor for the Environment, Nieves Atencia, had already met with the owners of the quarry.
To cut a long story short, the Councillor promised that the Town Hall was already acting in where it has jurisdiction, so to speak (competencia). The Municipal Surveyor has already been out inspecting the access lane which has been affected by the rock slide and is drawing up a report.
She said that they would act on a previous request by locals to have the quarry road where it crosses the access road tarmacked, to stop lorries gravel and stones onto the surface from the earth track. They will also removed the humps in the access lane as it climbs the hill because they are obstacles to farming vehicles – heavily loaded vans and Landrovers, etc, especially if they are pulling trailers.
The company, for their part, have promised to building retaining walls above the tracks to prevent further rockfalls.
The Councillor also emphasised that it is not the responsibility of the Town Hall to sort these problems, but that of the Junta de Andalucia, who have the responsibility over mines and quarries.
