It looks like a scene from World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, but this is the security fence around Spanish, North African enclave, Melilla.
Around 500 illegal immigrants tried to get past the security fences in Ceuta and Melilla either by climbing them or swimming around them during this month. After 200 immigrants simultaneously assaulted the Melilla fence, a 40-metre section collapsed and six Guardia Civil policemen were injured – it is not known just how many immigrants were injured getting over the 6-metre-high fence.
Special units from the Guard Civil, trained in crowd control had been shipped in to reinforce the frontier fences during the summer but even so, border-control units could not cope with such a coordinated assault involving hundreds of people.
With over 100 illegal immigrants being rounded up within the maze of streets in Melilla, holding facilities for use prior to repatriation have been overwhelmed: they are designed to cope with a maximum of 480 persons but after the mass assault they are trying to cope with 950 illegal immigrants.
It is by no coincidence that the assault was carried out on the 516th anniversary of the founding of this Spanish city on the shores of North Africa.
