The Almuñécar Town Hall carried out a complete survey of the accident rates on all of its streets in order to diminish the same.
Now that the ‘complete picture’ has been obtained, – the Policía Local were charged with the task – safety measures will be taken on the ‘hot spots’ around town, such as the Avenida Costa del Sol. But it’s not only about where the accidents happened, but also who causes them and who the victims normally are.
The measures will surely include more raised zebra crossing, improved warning signs and even speed traps.
During 2012 there were 118 traffic accidents, 33% of that total occurred during July and August, not surprisingly. Not one of these accidents proved fatal, thankfully, but ten people were seriously hurt and 59 were slightly hurt.
The hot spots were Avenida Costa del Sol, Avenida Juna Carlos I, Carretera Suspiro del Moro (San Sebastian road) and on the Paseo de Andrés Segovia in La Herradura. 208 vehicles were involved, 53% of which were family cars.
As for what caused them, 39% were due to drivers not respecting traffic signs, etc; and 29% were due to people not paying attention to the traffic. Only in one in ten accidents were pedestrians involved.
Finally, when did most of them occur? On weekday mornings, is the answer.
