The opposition party in the Motril Town Council have criticized the running of the local TV channel, which costs the public coffers 600,000 euros per year.

This complaint was ‘stimulated’ by the inclusion of Telemotril within the public TV channels in Andalucia that allegedly manipulate news coverage in favour of the ruling party in each case. In fact, the Audiovisual Board of the Junta considers that Motril is in the top four of the most manipulated public broadcasting sources in the whole of Andalucia.

The PSOE opposition party laments that 600,000 euros is spent on running costs each year for something that is “mainly used” for broadcasting “PP propaganda.”

On the other hand, the Secretary General for the PP in Motril, José Fuentes García, denies that his party manipulates the municipal radio and TV services.

Editorial Note: the general perception of local TV stations, funded by town halls, is one of biased coverage. Many question, in fact, why Motril or any other municipality ‘needs’ a local TV station in this day and age, and indeed, in the past. We live in the age of the Internet, after all.

And one last point, is that the socialist regional government should single out a conservative-run municipal TV station for criticism is hardly a surprise.
