The Vélez-Málaga law court has found a football player guilty of headbutting a referee who had shown him a red card. He was subsequently fined 360 euros and ordered to pay 720 euros in compensation.
The incident took place a year ago but has only just reached court. According to the judge’s findings, the victim had been refereeing a match in Vélez-Málaga and towards the end of the first half had seen a player deliberately kicking an opposing player. He pulled out a red card…
The immediate reaction of the chastised player was to ‘stick the nut on the Ref,” causing him to fall to the ground. Not content and opting for another manifestation of his annoyance, he then proceeded to kick the referee as he lay on the ground. But he wasn’t alone because he was joined by other ‘unidentified’ players from his team.
It took the referee twelve days to recover from the hiding (beating), during which time, quite naturally, he desisted from refereeing other matches.
The judge considered that although the condemned man denied the charges, sufficient evidence existed to support the claim made by the referee, backed by a statement given by one of the linesmen.
