With rain provoking mudslides and rockfalls all over Spain, it is not surprising that something of this nature should occur closer to home: Nerja.
Tourists and residents alike received quite a shock around midday on the 8th of March, down on Playa Burriana when a large section of earth embankment/cliff gave way onto a street in front of a block of flats, in the southern part of Urbanización Capistrano Playa. Fortunately, despite the hour, nobody was hurt because nobody was passing by that way.
The same can’t be said for the cars parked there as some were hit by quite large boulders. One of the casualties was a Nissan Note, hire car. It was in no condition to be driven anywhere and had to be carted off by a breakdown truck.
As always, it’s not the rainy days that cause these slippages, but the sunny ones that follow them, as the ground begins to dry out.
The Local Police were needed to supervise the clearing up, as well as redirect traffic, which was completely disrupted. In fact, this particular street is going to remain closed to traffic until the Nerja Town Hall can ascertain the stability of the embankment. Unfortunately, it affects a road leading up from the paseo area.
