Motril will be hosting, for the fifth time, the Ramón Portillo, international painting competition.
Artists should submit their entry between the 9th and 30th of April to the Fábrica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar Certamen. The competition will be handing over a total of 11,000 euros in prize money, with 7,000 euros for the winner and 4,000 euros for the runner up.
The Mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, signed the act which brings into being the V Certamen de pintura Ramón Portillo, which counts on the collaboration of the Mancomunidad de la Costa Tropical (chaired by her Vice-Mayor, Garcia Fuentes) and the Granada Provincial Council, for which she is the Vice-Chairwoman, as well as being the Mayor of Motril. Also collaborating is the Amigos Ramón Portillo club, chaired by another Vice-Mayor of Motril, Nicolás Navarro García.
This competition, which is held every two years, bears the name of this famous Seville-born painter, Ramón Portillo, born in 1929, who moved to Motril in 1964 where he taught as an art teacher at the I.E.S. Julio Rodríguez and I.E.S. Fco. Javier de Burgos secondary schools.
The last time that the competition was held, which was in 2011, there were 300 paintings entered by artists not only from the area, but from the rest of Spain and abroad in Europe and South America.
As for the terms of the competition, entries must be original works and have not won prizes in other competitions. Style and subject are open and the size cannot be smaller than 10 cm nor greater than 200 cm.
As for the financing of the event, the Town Hall will be putting up 11,500 euros, thanks to 4,500 received as a grant from the provincial council and 2,500 euros donated by Alcampo. The Mancomunidad will be providing a further 5,500 euros.
The Mayor pointed out, by the way, that the winning entries will pass into public ownership, forming part of the Artistic Heritage of Motril.
