A 16-year-old pupil at a secondary school in Barbate, Cádiz, set light to his female teacher’s hair with his cigarette lighter.

The incident occurred on Wednesday the 20th at the Instituto Vicente Aleixandre when the boy allegedly got up from his seat and simply set fire to her hair.

Consequently, he has been charged with tentative bodily harm and undermining a figure of authority, thanks to a new law which puts school teachers on the same level as a policeman when exercising their profession at school. This doesn’t mean that they can arrest a pupil, but simply that a physical attack on a teacher is tantamount to an attack on a policeman. This came after repeated acts of aggression against school teachers by parents and pupils.
