Brass Band Battle

No, it’s not another punch up down Carchuna way, but merely a musical competition between town brass bands, which was held in La Herradura Civic Centre.

La Banda Municipal de Huétor Santillán and La Banda de Música de la Asociación Musical de Quéntar received top marks at the competition and have therefore qualified for the final phase for the 1st Provincial Brass Band Competition, which is organised by the Provincial Council.

The jury at the La Herradura competition was formed by Lirio Palomar Faubel, Miguel Quirós Parejo and Francisco Higuero Palomar, evaluated the bands on their interpretation of the pieces played, instrument mastering, rhythm, the sound balance throughout the performance, stage presence and originality.

Besides the two above-mentioned bands, the other competitors were La Asociación Cultural “Banda de Música de Cájar” and La Banda Municipal de Música de Gualchos–Castell de Ferro. The Gualchos’ band played Highway to Hell and Smoke on the Water, during which they threw burning guitar amps into the audience… just kidding.

In two days time from the writing of this article; i.e., the semifinals will continue in Castilléjar, where La Banda de Música de Almuñécar, La Asociación Músico-Cultural Banda de Música Villa de Íllora, La Banda Municipal de Música de Chauchina and la Agrupación Musical de Montefrío will battle it out – we’ll be at the printers by then and unable to cover it in the hard copy.
