The sight of an elderly Spanish man sitting outside his house on a chair, enjoying the cool of the evening is timeless, however the recent incident of two young women in Santa Elena (Jaen) repeatedly spitting on such a person is more of a ‘sign of the times,’ than ‘timeless.’
The said video was posted on Youtube on the 25th of July (now removed) and its author writes that he posted it there because what he witnessed ‘gripped his heart.’ “It is so cruel that it deserves to be made public – judge for yourselves,” said the caption.
The two young women approach, spit on the 80-year-old man and then retire only to return and do the same. No matter that the man has mobility problems and suffers from senile dementia.
Their families defend them with one mother even claiming that the press were “making a mountain out of a molehill,” whilst a brother claims that the victim had made indecent suggestions to them.
When one of the victim’s nephews saw the video, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, and after approaching the families of the two women decided to lodge a formal complaint before the Guardia Civil. If this does go to court, however, and they are found guilty, they are only looking at fines between 30 and 120 euros.
The general feeling amongst the 1,000 inhabitants of the town is one of disgust, which is a sentiment generally shared by the 85,000 people who watched the video before it was taken down, judging by comments left on the site.
The Mayor of the town observed, “They are renowned for not having respect for anybody,” which appears to be an understatement.
