A Frenchman was drowned whilst on holiday in Estepona, attempting to rescue an 8-year-old girl that was trapped in an undertow.
The 42-year-old man spotted the girl, who was in the water with a surfboard, and with other beach users, entered the water despite the surf to reach the girl. Of the group that entered the water, two were unable to reach the beach again, one of them being the Frenchman – the second man eventually reached the beach.
Fortunately, the rest of the rescuers were able to reach the girl and bring her safely to dry land.
As the incident occurred before 12.00h, there was no danger flag flying to warn swimmers against entering the water.
