The Teaching Bond

ESO3-level pupils from Órgiva’s secondary school, IES Alpujarra, put on a charity performance to raise funds for the local branch of the AECC (cancer association). The reason: one of the English teachers in the school had been diagnosed with cancer.

The teacher has been off sick until a month ago, owing to chemotherapy treatment – she didn’t miss the performance. The kids said that they missed ‘her list of interminable homework chores.’

She said that cancer is not something you should hide from children of that age; they have to learn that these things happen and that the support of those that surround you is so important.

But she won’t be returning to her wards, as she has done each autumn for the last three years, as she has been given a different school to work in, so there was no way that she would miss the performance, to give them her thanks and to say goodbye to them, although she hopes to keep in touch via facebook.
