Two-Wheeled Acrobats

The Almuñécar municipal stadium, Francisco Bonet, will host the Spanish Championships of Freestyle MX2012 this summer, which is probably the most spectacular motorbike sporting event around – if you haven’t seen these gravity-defying riders in action, then you are seriously missing out.

You have plenty of time between now and the 11th of August, when it takes place, to brand this information onto your forehead with your wife’s curling irons so that you won’t forget, because when the Spanish champions in this sport get together, what you are seeing are literally the world’s best in Freestyle.

This has all been thanks to the Federación Española de Motociclismo, the Almuñécar Town Hall, and above all, the indefatigable Jorge Barea, who many years ago brought this sport to Almuñécar, using the old Taramay football stadium in Barrio San Juan, where the industrial estate now stands. We can’t forget, either, José Manuel Hidalgo and Francisco Manuel Alonso, who, together with Jorge, are the local organizers.

The Councillor for Sport says that thanks to an accord with the organisers, after the first 4,000 tickets are sold, the Municipal Sports Board receives 25% of ticket-office takings. Entrance tickets, by the way, range between 15 euros and 45, depending on the stadium area.

Finally, the 11th falls squarely within the August fiesta week, so this will be just one more event within the week’s agenda.
