Rojas Rises

The Mayor of Motril, Carlos Rojas, has resigned from the mayoralty to take up a post in the regional parliament. He had hoped to be able to hold onto both posts, but a new law prevents politicians from doing that – as is only logical.

The consequence of this transfer is that Motril will now have its first female mayor in its long history; Luisa García Chamorro. Both politicians are to be congratulated on their new posts, however, the chief opposition party, the PSOE, doesn’t see it that way.

The Spokeswoman for the socialists, Flor Almón, considers that Rojas has let his Motril voters down – the ones that gave him an absolute majority in the last municipal elections – by abandoning them in favour of his own personal advancement. In other words, she considers that he used his position as Mayor of Motril and President of the Area Council (Manicomunidad) to further his own career.

Readers can be forgiven for thinking that this is precisely what being a politician is about – moving up the power ladder, using positions as stepping stones. Ms Flor Almón, made of sterner stuff, apparently has no ambitions above representing the good folk of Motril, it would appear. Watch this space.
