Record Unemployment in Salobreña

The IU councillor, Ángel Coello will present a motion in the next plenary meeting of the Town Council to create an employment plan and job reserve as a means of combating rising unemployment in the town, which presently stands as 1,558.

“There are many families that have used up all their unemployment benefit entitlement and at present have no income at all,” he explained, adding, “too many families are living off the help offered by relatives or by Caritas.”

The job reserve idea is to create a number of rotative jobs, meaning that those who are unemployed and receive no unemployment benefit can enjoy one of these jobs for a small duration before the post goes to another person.

The trouble is that the Salobreña Town Hall is wallowing in debt, mainly thanks to the previous administration that ran up considerable debts with suppliers etc, so it is difficult to see how it can afford to create such a ‘job reserve’ and furnish it with salaries.
