Many Bars But Few Inhabitants

(Poniente de Granada) Granada has always been a province with a swarm of small bars – just about every ground floor of a block of flats has one… or two, but the town that has proportionally more bars than any other is little old Moraleda de Zafayona.

Moraleda has a total population of 2,500… that’s men women and children, but nevertheless, six bars and four restaurants appear to make a living from the townsfolk.  Well, that’s not quite true, because what keeps these businesses going is their reputation outside the municipality, meaning that people come in from other towns to fill their stomachs and the proprietors’ tills.

Prior to 1992, Moraleda was a stopping point for travellers along the old main road between Granada and Málaga, with many bars and restaurants springing up on that crossroads. But with the coming of the autovia, the traveller-trade was lost, so the owners of these establishments decided to concentrate on their neighbouring towns: Tocón, Huetor Tájar, Villanueba and íllora.

People now come to sample the choto speciality of Restaurante el Cruces, the roast-meats dishes, prepared in the wood oven of Los Mohinos, or simply the tapas in Jaleo Tapas and Pillín. Even the Town Hall got in on the act (participating) by organising a tapa route. Anyway, don’t know about you guys, but it might be worth a trip up there to check out the roasts!
