(Malaga city) You often hear about referees coming off the worse for wear in confrontations with irate football players or their fans, but it’s not very often that the referee in question is a woman.

Well, a man is standing trial for throwing a wooden box at a female referee after a match, and he had better hope that he doesn’t come up in front of a female judge, because he stands accused of insulting the referee with the observation; “Bloody women are only good at washing plates!”

It was with this first observation that the incident began, as she was making her way to the changing room. He made the gesture of attempting to thump her, but several players held him back. She tried to ignore him and continue on her way.

Unfortunately, the next thing she knew was that a flying box bounced off the back of her head and neck, causing an injury that took 30 days to mend.

If the Public Prosecutor gets his way, it’s two years in prison, a 600-euro fine and 4,385 euros in compensation. If he’s tried by a female judge, then he can expect to take his testicles home in his handkerchief.
