Tragic Day on the Coast

The 11th of August saw two deaths on the Costa Tropical: one in Castell de Ferro and the other in Salobrena.

At 10.00h the Guardia Civil located the body of a 31-year-old man at the bottom of a barranco, in the cove called Cala Zacatin. The family had reported him missing on Tuesday, both at the main police station in Motril, as well as the Guardia Civil post in Castell de Ferro. The man was last seen alive in a chiringuito in Castell, where he had left his clothes and mobile phone.

The police, following information given by the family, etc began searching the coastline between the Motril municipal boundary and Castell, which was when they came across the body. Owing to the very steep – almost vertical cliff – nature of the coastline at that location, the body had to be recovered by the marine branch of the Guardia Civil. Initial investigations indicate that he might have fallen some considerable distance, but that the injuries did not lead the police to believe that he had suffered a violent attack.

More or less at the same time in the morning, the emergency services in Salobrena were alerted by a bather who claimed he had seen what looked to be a corpse floating in the water, in front of the Chiringuito El Molino.

The Policia Local, Proteccion Civil and an ambulance from the medical centre went to the scene of the sighting and a Proteccion Civil zodiac launch located the body and brought it to the beach, where attempts to revive him were made, but to no avail.

The 74-year-old man from Madrid showed all the signs of having drowned but the body was taken to Granada for an official autopsy. The man and his family had spent the last 20 years enjoying their holidays in Salobrena, so he was a regular visitor to the town.

Apparently, the man used to take long swims in the sea every day. Female members of the family were on the beach with him but they didn’t know that anything had happened to him until the body was taken to the first-aid post on the beach.
