A high-speed, police car chase, which started on the Motril port road, ended on the pedestrian promenade, Las Esplanada, which was packed with people at the time.
The chase began when a Local Police patrol car spotted a car moving at high speed, so they tried to stop it, but instead of pulling over, the driver increased speed and attempted to flee. The most hair-raising point came when the car entered the pedestrian area, travelling its entire length before crashing into the upper structure of the subterranean rubbish bins.
The police managed to warn most of the evening strollers through the patrol car’s loudspeaker system, shouting for them to get up onto the flower beds and out of the way.
Although the man tried to escape on foot, he was soon arrested. It turned out that the car had been stolen from a repair workshop moments before and the driver had a criminal record for robbery.
Amazingly, considering the circumstances, nobody was hurt – not even the driver upon crashing.
