Salty Sallies

Jan Forstendorfer, a 60-year-old German sailor with no legs, made Motril a port of call on his single-handed voyage from Mallorca to Hamburg.

Jan, who lost his legs two years ago, has a dream of of sailing around world. He considers that his limitations are psychological; not physical and that with the right training, all is possible. That, Ladies and Gentlemen, is a man with no legs but plenty of balls!

Another man, out to sea without a leg to stand on, is the chap that swam away from the beach in Torrenueva to escape a fight and who was eventually found, several hours later, clinging to a bouy, 200 metres out.

He was discovered thanks to a man in a chalet who could hear him calling for help. It was 2.20am on a Sunday morning and pitch black, but the surprised house owner, a 50-year-old Lithuanian man, could just hear him, so he called the police… Lucky bugger! When his rescuers found him, he was already suffering from hypothermia.

But that’s nothing compared to the poor sod who was found three nautical miles out to sea, after drifting for four hours on his half inflated dingy.

He must have fallen asleep and the next thing he knew he was on his way to Morocco, or better said, to the bottom! He had only bought the Mickey-Mouse contraption from a Chinese shop the day before and was ready to take on the Seven Seas…
