Nobody could have failed to notice the new street flower displays; large square, chest-type affairs that line Avenida de Andalucia, for example. Well, all those different flowers and plants have obviously been too much of a temptation for many, because as soon as the plant boxes had been decked out with an array of flowering shrubs they disappear, ending up in peoples gardens or balconies. Some of the plants are even lasting a couple of hours before being ‘relocated.’
“It is just not comprehensible that the effort made to make the town more attractive in these hard economical times is being destroyed during the night when the same plants are so cheap to buy elsewhere,” lamented the Head of the Public Parks and Gardens Department.
They have been planting rose bushes and carnations, as well as baby palms, but the plants haven’t had the chance to take root before they are ripped out or cut back to deprive them of the flowers.
The Town Hall points out that they can’t keep policemen guarding flower displays 24 hours a day so it is just a case of people showing a little more civic responsibility.
