This related story occurred in Jaén and involves a 38-year-old Spanish mother, whose dead baby was found in a wardrobe. She is now recovering in hospital from the rigors of having given birth.
There appears to be less doubt over the intentions in this case – although a judge has still to decide – because the newborn child died from cranial injuries.
When the baby was first found, wrapped in a sheet, its birth cord was found around its neck, leading to the initial conclusion that it had been strangled by its own umbilical cord during the birth process. However, first indications from the autopsy indicate that it was a violent death.
Events came to light when the family of Maria del Mar G.Z. called the ambulance at 11.00 in the morning because she was in a bad way. The woman was lying in a blood-soaked bed when the ambulance crew found her, complaining of pain in her kidneys.
As soon as the doctors at the hospital examined her it was obvious that she had just given birth, so the obvious question was where was the baby?
A patrol car from the Policia Nacional was sent round to her house in Calle Reventón in Barrio San Juan, where the door was opened by the woman’s 21-year-old daughter. She told them that she had found a dead baby in the wardrobe.
Again, nobody was aware of the pregnancy; not the daughter nor any of the family.
