Socialists Win Salobrena

It was on the cards, so no surprises there: the PSOE regained the Mayor’s office after eight years of PP councils under the Jesus Avelino.

Basically, the PSOE picked up the three council seats that the PP lost. Besides that, it seems that the PSI/PP coalition council cost the Independent socialist party under Cobos (PSI) a council seat, as well, which went to Izquierda Unida (IULV-CA).

Incidentally, these results in Salobrena was one socialist victory with a tidal wave of PP victories across the country – a little local solace.

The results are as follows:
2011: PSOE 8, PP 4, IULV-CA 2, PA-EPA 2, PSI-S 1
2007: PSOE 5, PP 7,IULV-CA 1, PA1, PSI-S 2, PSA 1

As the PSOE is the most voted party, they get first shot at forming a government, as to obtain a majority council they need just one seat and they have three possible allies where they can get it. For the PP, on the other hand, to retain the Mayor’s office, they would have to enlist the help of every other political party, but this would involve some impossible political bed partners.

Ironically, Salobrena has suffered the inconvenience of being a conservative municipality under a socialist regional government. Now, however, with the socialist set to lose control of the Junta in next year’s regional elections to the conservatives, the situation will be reversed, but no better.
