Drowned Angler

The major but very sad news this month is the death of an angler on the Punta de la Mona. The 29-year-old man, Carlos P.A., had stripped and jumped into the sea and it is reported that a wave threw him against the rocks, causing him to drown.

He and a group of friends had made their way from Motril to fish off the Corralón, which is considered a prime angling spot. What lead him to jump into the sea? Reports suggest that he had a good size catch on the line but could not land it, so he jumped in to bring it ashore.

However, Luis Pellejero, the head diver of the Centro de Buceo, who recovered the body, said the water was cold and the sudden change of temperature (he was wearing no thermal suit, remember) might have given him cramp. He was called out from the Marina del Este when a call for help was made from 112.
The diver located the body at 26 metres’ and brought it to the surface where a Guardia Civil patrol boat was waiting.
