The Termites of Doom

Termites are on the verge of bringing many buildings in the old town down about inhabitants of Íllora’ ears. For the past fifteen years the voracious critters have succeeded in creating huge colonies up to two metres below ground.

Baza Growing

Baza’s Town Hall has announced that it will sell their old sports complex for two million euros in order to not only build a new one, but also houses and a Lidl supermarket.

Easing The Burden

In a move similar to recent activity in Loja, Baza’s Socialist government has announced that it will not raise local taxes in 2011, and will actually lower property tax. Economy Minister, Ramón Pozo, said he was aware of the problems people were having in the crisis and this was a way to help them.

Twisted Words & Minds

Yet more political comments are being debated, this time in Guadix, as to what the speaker meant and if the intended listener really understood the words.

Guadix Ignored

The PP of Guadix has complained that the Junta de Andalucía has left Guadix out of 2011budget. “This is the worse budget in the past 30 years,” said the party. They also offered a reward to anyone who could find Guadix in the proposed financial overhaul.

Prados Elected as Socialist Candidate

Francisco Prados was re-elected as the socialist candidate for the Mayoralty. Paco, who is also a high-school Mathematics teacher, made an interesting acceptance speech in which he urged Almuñequeros ‘to lose their fear and recover their freedom,’ referring to a palpable reticence in the town to speak out against the Mayor – justified or not.

Speed Cameras

First of all, they appeared in La Herradura and were the talk of the town, and now they have made an appearance in Almuñécar – and we’re not talking about tourists who took the wrong turning and ended up here, but the dreaded speed cameras.

Tarde News

The following incident took place at the beginning of October but was not included in the November edition owing to a filing error. (Yet another!) Hey, I’m in the throes of moving house!

Non-Stick Benny…

Benny has been acquitted – yet again! This time, he dodged a possible 2-year stretch in prison with a corresponding 10-year barring from public office. The latest judicial reprieve comes over the hitherto ‘illegal’ sports centre that was built in the vega of La Herradura, next to Río Jate. This means that nothing (judicial) stands between the Mayor and possible re-election in May next year in the municipal elections.
