The cutting down of trees continues to cause friction between ecologists and opposition parties, on one side, and the governing PP, on the other. Now the Regional Ombudsman has decided to get involved, bless him, at the petition of the IU.
It all started off when the IU complained that 120 trees (around 30 years old) that had previously stood along the Avenida de Salobreña had been uprooted with vague promises of replanting. The IU, since then, claims that they have died.
In the petition to the Ombudsman the IU also claim that centenary Ficus trees, adult pines have been uprooted from the Paseo de Las Esplanadas. Yet what took the biscuit (worst point) was the cutting down of three huge pines on Playa Granada to make way for a private urbanización, because they spoilt the beach view for the projected housing, according to the IU. The spokesman for the political party points out that back in 2007 the trees received a reprieve, thanks to a popular protest and the collecting of signatures of support for the cause.
Finally, the Town Hall denies they have cut down trees, but on the contrary have increased the green areas of the town. Hmmm… If that is the case, then we can only assume that the trees were kidnapped by aliens… the cads!
