Hands Off

The Regional Council for Culture has said ‘hands off’ to the Town Hall over their plans to demolish the Alcoholera (The old building where the municipal TV station is housed, between the park and La Esplanada).

The idea behind the demolition was to make way for a pedestrian bridge from La Esplanada to El Parque de Las Americas. However, as the building is on the heritage list of protected buildings, it isn’t going to happen. But it’s not only the Casa de Administración that is protected; the Cultural Board has pointed out that the chimney, the distillery, and the store – indeed, the whole complex, are similarly protected.

Undaunted, the Town Hall declared that it respects this decision, but that the ‘pasarela’ (bridge) will be built, as the funds have already been set aside and there is a ‘popular clamour.’ Obviously, the original plans will have to be altered to work around this ‘historic obstacle.’
