Greenhouses are being cleaned out ready for the next crops to be planted and the agricultural treatment plant in Motril has provisionally closed due to … yes, you guessed it, the intense rains that we have been having this year.
Firstly, the agriculturalists earlier in the year suffered pricing difficulties with their cucumbers, which they then dumped on the beaches in protest, secondly, they experienced crop damage due to the weather and thirdly, to now have the only place closed in the area they can dump their leftover residues is not helping keep their tempers in check.
The agriculturists suggest that before deciding to close the treatment plant, the authorities should have looked for an alternative solution especially when the first crops of the year have been reaped and the second crop is now being planted.
As Easter approaches piles of residues will now no doubt end up being dumped on hillsides or left to rot elsewhere which themselves are being classed as a ‘ticking time bomb’ that threatens the sanitary state of affairs in the region. There is nothing like letting your rubbish pile up on your own front door step to decay.
