Jamón Serrano is probably one of the most famous products of La Alpujarra, even more so since the Rey de los Jamones, disappeared, owing thousands of euros, but that’s a different story.
The fact is that if you want a decent leg of mountain-cured ham it would cost you a pretty packet, especially if you’re talking about Pata Negra, but this year it is different for two reasons: firstly, like the cucumbers down on the coast, there has been an over production, and secondly, because nobody has two euros to rub together. Result: record-cheap Jamón Serrano for all!
A leg or shoulder of ham has been an integral part of Christmas here and thanks to these two before-mentioned factors, you can buy the stuff at 20th-century prices: i.e., around six euros a kilo (what was 1,000 pesetas).
In Jamones Muñoz Yegen, for example, you can buy a cheap one for 37 euros. You really have to go back to the 90’s when a leg would cost you about 5,000 pesetas! (30 euros).
Mind you, if you’re looking for something a little more up-market, you can buy a piece of between six and eight kilos that has been maturing for a minimum of 16 months for 50 euros. Great news for Serrano fans!
