There was a Letter to the Editor in the Ideal newspaper on the 5th of August, entitled: The Right to Protest in Almuñécar, which was sent in by Concepción Barrencheguren from Granada. In it she refers to some people in Almuñécar who consider that visitors do not have any right to protest over the state of the town.
First of all, she says that everybody has that right, regardless of whether their complaint is valid or not – they have the right to express it.
She also argues that by owning a property in the township makes them a local, even though they don’t live there full time. She argues that even though such property owners do not spend the majority of the year in Almuñécar, they pay the same amount of taxes/rates as people who do.
She went on to point out that although the Mayor might prefer ‘class tourism,’ such visitors were not likely to come, much less stay, when the town is turned upside down and dirty – referring to Velilla and San Cristóbal.
She concludes by asking the Mayor to make sure that the Velilla one-way-traffic access is not cut in September, leaving the area without direct access from Almuñecar to Velilla for emergency vehicles, especially ones that have to reach the medical centre in an emergency.
