EBAR Ends Stink

ALM EBARDo you know what the EBAR is? It means Estación de Bomba de Aguas Residuales; in other words, sewage pumping station. Well, the blockhouse affair right next to Las Góndolas is precisely that.
The impressively depressing building should be working by the end of the year, liberating the locals, at last, of the all-pervading ‘hum’ that wafts out of the old one. Well, that’s the plan at least!
The Board of the Environment of the Junta de Andalucía is financing several projects on the Costa Tropical, at the moment, with a budget of six million euros – included within is our dear EBAR, costing a mere 1.7m euros.
The actual construction work is not far off being finished and then the hungry building will await the pumping machinery to be installed, according to Sr. Aragón, who is a heavyweight pen-wielder in Sevilla.
So as not to cause a stink – both figuratively and physically – the Junta reached an agreement with the Town Hall not to begin connecting up the pipes until the summer has passed; i.e. October.
The old pump for the EDAR (Estación de Depuración de Aguas Residuales or sewage treatment plant further up the plant was wiped out by the gleeful storm waters of two years ago, which was a bit of a blessing because the bloody thing never seemed to work properly anyway. This event brought about the complete overhaul of the pumping system and left us with this ‘Atlantic-Wall fortification,’ soon to be christened the Hunker (Burger) Bunker.
The Delegate for the Department of the Environment proudly pointed out that the installations can deal with the combined digestive output of 200,000 souls… with one hand tied behind its back.
