On Sunday, Almuñécar held of the 37th Trópico de Europa Long-Distance Race, which is part of one of Andalucía’s most prominent long-distance running circuits.

All told, 1,200 runners participated, which was the highest participation figure in recent runs, over a new 10-kilometre route, taking runners from the Municipal Sports Stadium through the Vega de Río Verde, before continuing through the town centre and along the seafront paseos of Puerta del Mar, Reina Sofía, and Velilla.

Unlike Monday, the weather behaved with sunshine throughout the entire morning, and temperatures peaked around 27ºC; a warm sunny day rather than a baking one.

In the absolute men’s category, victory went to Javier Gutiérrez Enríquez from Grupo Alpino Benalmádena Irontriath, who completed the 10km route in 32:25 minutes. In the women’s category, the winner was Claudia Estévez Martín from Serrano Club Atletismo, with a time of 37:20.

Among the local runners, the fastest was Luis Manuel Padial García with a time of 37:14 minutes, followed by Fran Jerónimo Alonso and Miguel Córdoba Belbel. In the local women’s category, the first-place finisher was Encarnación Castillo Montes with a time of 48:45, followed by Carmen Rodríguez Ligero and Ángela Ozaeta Rodríguez.

The race also maintained its charitable side through the Corro por la Vida campaign, which is linked to the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC). Participants were able to contribute by purchasing a charity bib number, whilst a bib-number-zero option allowed people to make a donation to the association without having to compete in the race.
