A 29-year-old man in Almuñécar was arrested yesterday, suspected of being behind four attempted break-ins against shops around town.

The incidents took place during the morning of the 8th of this month when the Central Operativa de Servicios (COS) alerted the Guardia Civil in Almuñécar to a possible attempt to break into a shop. When the officers arrived, they saw that the shop window had been smashed although there were no signs of the culprit having gained access to the establishment.

Just a few minutes later, around 06.30h the COS reported that a burglar alarm had gone off in a nearby premises to the first. They rushed to the address, hoping to catch the culprit and again found a smashed shop window but this time signs of blood inside, meaning that the thief had actually gained access.

Both the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local began searching nearby streets and soon found an individual, who had a bleeding leg injury, just metres away from the second premises – the officers had practically followed the trail of blood. He was arrested and taken to the centro de salud to have his injuried seen to.  

Inside the second shop, they found a backpack with a hammer and a baseball cap, next to the till with coins scattered around from when the thief fled the scene.

It later turned out that as well as the aforementioned break-ins, the arrested man had attempted to break into two other shops – CCTV footage clearly identified the arrested man.

After appearing before a police court, he was freed pending trial.
