The Invisible World

The Policía Nacional has managed to thwart a forced marriage, involving a 14-year-old girl, who was virtually sold to a man in Italy.

Altogether, the police arrested three people involved in this sordid arrangement, one of whom was the ‘groom’ in Italy.

According to the police press release, the police operation began in July last year when a man and a teenage girl were stopped at the Los Rodeos-Tenerife Norte Airport. The minor was carrying the passport of a woman six years older than her.

The girl has gone missing from a shelter for minors, who had reported her as missing. Then one of the other minors at the shelter said that they had seen her at a bus stop accompanied by an adult man.

The police finally caught up with them at the said airport and checked her passport, which did not correspond to her, so they arrested the man and took her into custody, as well.

Questioning the minor at the police station she told them that she had been forced into an arranged marriage to a man in Italy who had already paid her ‘dowry’ to her family.

The officers not only confiscated the passport but they also obained other documents of “great interest” to them, as well as the man’s mobile phone. This also led to the arrest of the person behind the passport forgery.

Finally, in May this year, thanks to the cooperation of Interpol, the ‘groom’ was arrested in Italy and taken into custody pending extradition to Spain.
