A young girl died yesterday after being swept out the sea from Playa La Laja, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. 

The body of 14-year old minor (she was originally reported as being only 11) was found about 200 metres out, according to the Guardia Civil at a depth of six metres.

The incident ended around 16.30h when her body was located after an extensive search operation by land, sea, and air, and just hours before the rescue of another 12-year-old boy.

According to the Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad (Cecoes) 112, the young boy had also been in trouble in the sea and, after receiving initial First-Aid on the beach, he was transferred by the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC) to the Hospital Universitario Materno Infantil with mild symptoms of drowning.

The alert was received at 13:36h, saying that two minors were having difficulties in the water off the coast of La Laja. An extensive rescue operation was immediately activated in an area where warnings to take precautions due to a dangerous sea state had already been issued this very week. In fact, 112 Canarias has kept a pre-alert for coastal meteorlogical conditions active since Monday in Gran Canaria and four other islands.

Fortunately, the Cruz Roja lifeguards managed to pull the 12-year-old boy out quickly, while the remaining resources began the search for the other missing minor. finally, her body was found and transferred by a Guardia Civil launch to San Cristóbal dock. 

The search & rescue operation involved a helicopter belonging to the Grupo de Emergencias y Salvamento (GES), Salvamento Marítimo, Cruz Roja, Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional, Policía Local, el Servicio de Extinción de Incendios, Salvamento y Rescate from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
