Sierra Nevada began its 2026 summer season on Saturday the 11th, with a free Apache concert in the Plaza de Andalucía, opening its facilities to astronomy, nature, sports, and musical events.
They have also reactivated the Telecabina Borreguiles and the Telesilla Veleta so that visitors can go up to 3,000 metres along the high-altitude, scenic hiking trails.
The Chairwoman of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Rocío Díaz, explained that this varied cultural programme has the aim of attracting as many visitors as possible as a means of supporing local businesses on Pradollano, such as the restaurants and hotels.
Another reactivted feature is the Mirlo Blanco, activity complex and Montebajo, club pool, which opened this weekend past.
The opening concert is a feature of the Sierra Nevada Cover-Band Festival, which will continue until the 18th with performances by Elegante & Embustero, and The Changers.
In August, the Virgen de las Nieves festivities feature the group La Guardia on the 16th, and Sierra Nevada por Todo lo Alto rock festival takes place on the 21st and 2nd, with performances by Se Museum, Balas, Los Coronas, and Brighton 64.
Astronomy is a major summer experience up their under their clear night skies with no lumic contamination. Beyond standard observatory visits and sunset viewings from Veleta, special highlights include the Perseids meteor shower observation (August 11th & 12th) and a solar eclipse viewing (August 12th) from Borreguiles at 2,700 meters.
For hikers, nature trails are very popular right now due to visible snowfields remaining on popular routes like the Pico de Veleta ascent, Laguna de las Yeguas, and Lagunillos de the Virgen.
Then there’s the sports calendar bringing mountain racing with the inaugural Sierra Nevada Sky Running event, featuring a Vertical Kilometre on August 22nd and a multi-distance mountain race on August 23rd. And not forgetting the 42nd Subida Internacional Pico Veleta; a race of 50 kilometres starting down in the city of Granada and ending on the peak!
