A brutal road accident yesterday on the N-340 between Motril and Salobreña claimed the life of a 29-year-old man and four people injured to varying degrees, one seriously.

The road incident, caused by a lorry and a car, took place around 13.00h, just metres from the municipal boundary between the two municipalities, near the bridge over Río Guadalfeo.

It was a head on collision which ended up involving another car and a van.

The Guardia-Civil, traffic police, the Salobreña Policía Local, the Motril Fire Department and several 061 ambulances were immediately deployed. Fire personnel were needed to free occupants trapped in the wreckages.

Obviously with so many vehicles involved, tail backs in both directions soon grew in length.

Exactly what happened was not known at the time of the writing of this article, but it most likely involved somebody overtaking another vehicle and invading the oncoming lane. On the other hand, a driver might have had a sudden medical issue at the wheel causing him or her to lose control.
