Ever wondered what the previous Mayor of Salobreña is up to nowadays? No? Guess you haven’t but here goes anyway.
Well, after being stabbed in the back by her party colleague Pedro Javier Ortega Prados, who is now Mayor, María Eugenia Rufino decided to get stuck into the kitchen and become a chef.
Did she sit back and sulk? No! Did she draw silly moustaches on election poster’s of the Mayor? No… I think. What she did after eight successful years as Mayor was to decide on doing what she had always wanted since being a young teen; produce top-class dishes thanks to the inspiration from her mother and aunt.
Local dishes? Yes, but also ones from the Canary Islands and even as far away as Japan, including over 80 personal culinary creations. Yet you would be wrong to supposed that she scoffs the lot herself because she does private catering either in her own home or in her clients’ homes.
She got into this exclusive catering business by chance because a friend wanted to host a dinner for 20 guests but didn’t have the room, so she said, “You can use my garden terrace!” The rest is history.
Even when she was still Mayor Rufino her mind was also working on new dishes to put on her table so when she was “helped out of the Mayor’s office” in 2023, she thought, “kitchen here I come!”
Does she miss being the Mayor? Probably not, given that she did it for eight years before being pushed out by her ungrateful party despite winning two local elections for them.
Her culinary business is little more than a paid hobby, she admits because the profit margin is too narrow to make a living from it, so she does other things like organising equality events, for example, but her mind, most likely wanders into the kitchen even when she’s not in it.
