An explosion at the Hotel Carmen (now Olas de Almuñécar) caused a fire on the top floor of the building.
Around 13.10h, a powerful explosion occurred on the top floor (4th floor) of the building while Repsol employees were refilling fuel tanks. No injuries were reported; only one employee required medical attention for shock caused by the incident.

The entire floor caught fire and the hotel was evacuated as a precaution. The full complement of Almuñécar Policía Local and firefighters, as well as the Guardia Civil and paramedics, with an ambulance and helicopter, were dispatched to the scene in case their intervention was needed.
Emergency services are still working at the site at the time of writing.
This afternoon, the municipal architect will inspect the building to assess whether there has been any damage that could compromise the structure.
The powerful explosion was heard by the residents of nearby buildings and even as far away as the town-hall square, and the smoke was visible from several kilometres away.
